According to the United States Census Bureau. St. George has a total of 64.9 square miles and only 0.5 square miles (0.72%) is water. It lies in the lowest elevation region of the state of Utah with most of it below 3,000 feet. Due to the unique surroundings of mountains and red rocks and climate, St. George offers some of the most natural scenic beauty in all of the United States. As a result of great scenery and climate St. George has become one of the top tourist and retirement locations.
Locals welcome tourists to St. George with open arms for many events including the St. George Marathon, Iron Man, Huntsman World Senior Games, sports tournaments and many more. Those who visit St. George often decide to make the decision to either fully transplant or become snowbirds in the winter. Since 1990 St. George became one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas within the United States. In 2010 the US Census reported a population of 72,897 for St. George and 137,473 for all of Washington County with St. George being its principal city.
